Gourmet's 50 Women Game Changers

Mary from One Perfect Bite has organized a group to cook and blog our way through the list of Gourmet's 50 Women Game Changers.  This is week #23 - Nancy Silverton who among other projects started La Brea Bakery in 1989 and perhaps known most recently for her involvement in the restaurant group known as Mozza.   Each week you choose a dish of the featured Game Changer and so I chose Balsamic Glazed Onions.  I'm not sure why this dish...but anything with balsamic glaze gets my attention and with the holidays coming up...this is a great side dish that can be made ahead and served at room temperature...another plus, in my opinion for holiday meals.

The ingredients are simple...Balsamic, olive oil, sea salt, very large red onion, fennel fronds and stalks, bay leaves and dried fennel.  The complete recipe can be found here.
I'm new to the group, so perhaps this has already been discussed and debated, but I can't help but wonder why Giada De Laurentis and Sara Moulton did not make the list?

  1. Gorgeous dish, Annie. I'm loving the red onions with the fennel. Your photos are so bright and beautiful...(that's a touch of envy there, our winter light is fading here in New England).
I know what you mean about the women who didn't make the cut on Gourmet's list---what about Mollie Katzen? She's one of my favorites.
    Welcome to the group!

  4. What a beautiful dish! I love the flavors in here and can just imagine how lovely it tasted.

The list is definitely controversial. No comment on Giada, but I think Sara would make a great addition to the list. Ah yes, personal preference ;)

So glad to have you cooking through the 50 game-changers with us.

  7. Would love to have this at Thanksgiving, and I like that it can be made ahead of time. Hmm, I would have through Sara Moulton and Giada would have been on this list.

  9. You always post the best recipes! This is a perfect side dish for the upcoming holiday season! Enjoyed seeing the list of women, but also curious why Giada and Sara weren't included.

  10. Love the fennel in this dish! I've been on a fennel kick for a while. :)
There are lots of women chefs who I think should have made the list. Perhaps we should make our own list time time!

  12. You picked a lovely recipe to share with us today. As to your question: We had nothing to do with the selection of individuals on the list. We are just familiarizing ourselves with the women they chose. It would be interesting when we have completed featuring the chosen, to speak of omissions. I don't think this is the time to do it. It would diminish the contributions of those who made the list. Welcome to our merry band. You are a great addition to the group. Have a wonderful weekend. Blessings...Mary
